Water Heater Making Noise: What Each Sound Means
A water heater is supposed to be almost silent. Every noise is information.
Popping and rumbling: sediment
This is the most common sound by far, and it means sediment has collected in the bottom of the tank. In hard water areas across New York that layer builds within a few years. The burner heats the tank floor through the sediment, water trapped underneath flashes to steam, and the bubbles force their way up through the layer with a pop or a low rumble.
It matters for two reasons. The sediment insulates the water from the burner, so the unit burns more fuel to do the same work, and the tank floor overheats, which shortens the life of the tank. Flushing the tank removes the loose material. If it has hardened into a crust, flushing helps less and the unit is on borrowed time.
Ticking and clicking
Usually harmless. Metal pipe expands as hot water passes through and contracts as it cools, and the ticking is that movement against a strap or a joist. A heat trap nipple at the top of the heater can also click as flow starts and stops.
It becomes worth looking at only if it is loud enough to be new. A sudden change in a noise the house has always made is more informative than the noise itself.
Banging and hammering in the pipes
A single sharp bang when a tap or an appliance shuts off is water hammer, which is the momentum of moving water stopping abruptly. It is hard on joints and fixtures over time. Air chambers that have waterlogged or a missing arrestor on a washing machine line are the usual causes.
Repeated banging as the heater runs can also mean sediment moving in the tank or, on an electric unit, an element that has scaled up and is boiling water locally against its surface.
Hissing or sizzling
Sizzling at the base of a gas heater often means water is dripping onto the burner assembly. That water is coming from somewhere, and if it is condensation on a cold morning it may be normal, but if it is a tank leak it is not.
Hissing from the temperature and pressure relief valve is a warning worth acting on immediately. That valve opens when the tank is over-pressure or over-temperature, and it is the last safety device on the unit. A T and P valve that is discharging is not a nuisance to be capped, it is telling you something is wrong.
Screeching
A high-pitched screech is nearly always a valve that is partly closed, restricting flow. Check the shut-off on the cold inlet and any valve on the outlet. Water forced through a small opening whistles.
What to do about it
Flushing the tank once a year genuinely extends its life, particularly on the hard water common through Western New York, the Finger Lakes and Central New York. If the unit has never been flushed and is more than about six years old, flushing can occasionally dislodge material that then blocks the drain valve, so it is worth having someone do it who can deal with that if it happens.
If the noise is accompanied by a leak, rusty water, no hot water, or a discharging relief valve, stop diagnosing and call. Those combinations mean the tank itself is failing.

Is a noisy water heater dangerous?
Popping and rumbling from sediment is not immediately dangerous, but it shortens tank life. A discharging or hissing relief valve is different and should be looked at straight away.
Can flushing fix the noise?
Usually, if the sediment is still loose. Once it has hardened into a solid layer, flushing removes little and the noise stays.
How often should I flush my water heater?
Once a year in most of New York, and it is worth doing more often on very hard water or well supply with high mineral content.
