Sewer Backup Response in New York

Get the line flowing, then find out why it backed up.

What this job actually involves

Sewage coming up through a basement floor drain or the lowest tub in the house means the main line is blocked, not the fixture. We clear from the correct access point so the contents go down the line instead of further into the building, then put a camera down to see what caused it, because a main that backed up once will do it again.

In older New York housing stock the usual culprits are root intrusion at a clay joint, a bellied section holding solids, grease build-up, or wipes that never break down. Each of those has a different fix, and a cable that only punches a hole through the blockage is not one of them.

Customer reviews

Garbage disposal was humming and I was ready to buy a new one. It was jammed. He freed it, checked the trap, and charged me almost nothing.

We run a small restaurant and the floor drains were backing up mid-service. They came after close, jetted the grease line properly, and set us up on a schedule so it stopped happening.

Called at 1am with water coming through the kitchen ceiling. They talked me through shutting the main off while I was still on the phone, which stopped it getting worse, and had someone here before 3. The split was in a bathroom supply upstairs.

Sewer Backup Response: common questions

Why did it back up into the basement and not upstairs?

Waste finds the lowest opening. A blocked main pushes water out at the lowest fixture or floor drain in the building, which is why basements flood first.

Do I need the line replaced?

Not always. Roots and grease can often be cleared and jetted and the line kept in service for years. A collapsed or badly bellied section is a different conversation, and the camera tells us which one you have.

Is the sewer lateral my responsibility?

In most New York municipalities the property owner owns the lateral from the building to the main. We can help you confirm it with your local water or sewer authority before any digging.
