A sump pump is a single point of failure protecting a basement, and it almost always fails during the storm that needs it. The common faults are a stuck float, a seized motor after years of sitting, a check valve that lets water fall back into the pit, and a discharge line that froze or blocked outside.
We test under real conditions by filling the pit rather than lifting the float by hand, check the discharge run all the way to daylight, and size replacements for the pit and the head they actually have to lift against. Battery backup is worth discussing for any basement that would be expensive to flood.

How often should I test it?
Twice a year, and always before spring melt. Pour a bucket into the pit and watch it cycle and shut off cleanly.
Do I need a battery backup?
If your basement is finished, or if the storms that flood you are the same ones that cut the power, then yes. That is exactly when the primary pump is useless.
Why does my pump keep running?
